Crema Marfil is a very delicate and elegant marble not ideal for kitchen use due to its calcareous nature, or chalky characteristic. It can easily be damaged by acids, causing unwanted and probably permanent and irreversible etchings. It also is highly porous, so staining is very common.
If you are willing to use Crema Marfil on your kitchen countertop anyway, it is recommended to use honed Crema Marfil opposed to polished Crema Marfil. Though polished marble is more resistant to stains, it is highly susceptible to etchings.
Use coasters, cutting boards, place mats and trivets to protect the marble from scratches and stains. It is also important to use non-abrasive cleaners when cleansing your Crema Marfil. Abrasive material and grit can damage the marble. Acidic cleansers especially are a no-no.
But some people love the worn look of marble. They believe etching and stains can add rustic elegance to it.
